CASE STUDY FIVE

Raised Loft Boarding & Ladder Installation Coventry

Last month, we got a call from Mr and Mrs Clark and her husband living in Coventry looking for loft boarding and ladder installation services.

They wanted to increase their level of storage space throughout their home, but there's always the same storage space predicament for people like the Clark’s - new-build homeowners with a newborn on the way.

We’ve seen a small portion of new-build homeowners in Coventry voiding their new build insurance after trying to board their own loft to save money - not knowing the implications of carrying out work on a loft in a new build for storage.

We don't mean to scare you though! The Clark’s were fortunate enough to have done all their research, so their story ends fine. Plus, you’ll find some tips throughout this case study to help ensure you’re getting the best suited, most affordable loft services!

New Build Homeowners In Coventry: Loft Boarding Advice

Operating in Coventry and the surrounding areas, we’ve helped a wide range of homeowners to optimise their storage space and loft access.

We’ve gone to many loft ladder installations in Coventry and found the DIY version of loft boarding that's just not fit for purpose, despite the fact they use their loft regularly throughout the year.

But we can see how the life of a growing family can get in the way of home renovation, and any plans to sort out the loft “for good”, regardless of how often it's used.

However, if you have the time it really makes sense to make a safe and compliant loft space before you have to start thinking about throwing things out - that's just like working backwards, and not the way to go about it!

Mr and Mrs Clark on the other hand understood just how important the storage space will be when they begin to start a family, and with the exciting news that her firstborn is on the way, they couldn’t have chosen a better time to improve their loft access. Providing one of our affordable loft packages , which includes loft boarding and ladder with a made to measure hatch, we helped the family to achieve this.

Which Loft Ladder & Hatch Did They Choose And Why?

Mr and Mrs Clark told us that they were looking for a loft ladder and hatch that provides maximum safety and convenience - two main factors to consider when choosing a suitable ladder. If a customer ever opts for a loft ladder that we believe isn’t the most suitable, we’ll educate them on the main differences. Afterall, we want to get your loft space to be as much value to you as the other rooms in your house, with no space for improvement!

The couple had specified that they wanted a hatch that's fire-resistant and includes insulation, which many of our hatches do as standard, and provide increased safety and sustainability. We advised them to select a ladder first though, as some have their own individual hatch included.

Mrs Clark said that she’d feel much more comfortable climbing the ladder whilst carrying items if they went with a concertina style ladder. This is because the steps are less vertical and make it easier to climb one-handed as demonstrated in the image below.

While there are safer ways to get your items up into the loft (like working in pairs rather than solo), Mrs Clark wanted the freedom to access and store items independently. Seeing as her husband regularly travels for work throughout the week, usually arriving home late or stopping over, it was decided that the concertina ladder was the most suitable option for them.

Raised Loft Boarding Installation Coventry

The first stage of the job was to board the loft with a raised flooring system, which we have to do first in order to install the hatch properly and make space if there's access wiring etc. We love seeing the transformation from an empty loft to a fully boarded-out loft, so with a large amount of ground to cover we got straight to work.

We installed each section of the floor with the necessary stilts to raise the boards (supplied by LoftLeg), before adding the wooden boarding with precision and care. We understand that future changes may occur in your loft and other workers may need to access below the flooring, therefore we always ensure not to install them too tight so they can be removed with ease when required.
We then added some Steel Balustrades inside the loft space to increase the safety of the hatch for Karen while she enters, while she stands around the opening, and to aid her exiting the loft with extra grab rails.

Made To Measure Ladder and Hatch Installation

We began by removing the standard hatch that came with the property and making the hatch opening almost double the size. This involved installing the additional joists first to surround the new opening, before removing the necessary parts of the ceiling and insulation.

The installation of the hatch is often the trickiest part, however, overall it's quite straightforward and there are only a few things that can obstruct us from carrying out the work. These are things like wiring (which we’ll often reorganise ourselves) and any piping work that may be close to the hatch, which we’d have to assess during the quote.

If you find that your hatch isn’t big enough or needs moving to a more suitable part of the ceiling (with less pipes etc), then you’ll be glad to know that we’ll provide hatch relocation or enlargement as an extra service when needed.

Once the opening was made to a more suitable size, we then installed the new, insulated loft hatch and attached the spring-assisted mechanism that aids the opening and closing of the hatch, before doing the easy bit - installing the actual ladder itself.

Loft Services Coventry

The Clarks were very pleased with the look of their new hatch, which operates in a nice smooth motion and is fitted flush against the ceiling. Happy with our installation, they started testing the ladder and boarding straight away. They were so eager to store their items in the loft, that they’d even begun doing so before we’d finished cleaning up after ourselves!
